How booklet printing works
A booklet is made of sheets folded in the middle. Each sheet carries four pages, two on the front and two on the back, and the first sheet holds the first and last pages. Working out that order by hand is error-prone; this tool does it for you.
Print the result double-sided and choose "flip on short edge" in your printer settings. Stack the sheets in order, fold them in half together and staple along the fold.
Tip: For thick booklets of more than about 40 pages, split the PDF into parts and make several booklets.
