Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Image processing runs locally in a supported browser. Files are not uploaded by this plugin.

Why does the final file size vary?

The image content, dimensions, output format and browser encoder affect the result. Some already-optimized files cannot be made smaller without changes.

Will transparent images stay transparent?

PNG and WebP support transparency. JPG does not, so transparent pixels are placed on white when converting to JPG.
