What can be repaired?
Most "file is damaged" errors come from a broken internal index, extra data at the start or end of the file, or a download that stopped early. The index can almost always be rebuilt.
If part of the file is truly missing, those pages can't be brought back, but the pages that remain are saved. Rescued pages are pictures, so their text can't be selected.
